CHULA'S CAPOEIRA PROFILE

Professor Chula started to practice capoeira in 1994, when he was 14, in his hometown, Sao Vicente, by the coast of Sao Paulo, with Professor Paulo from Grupo Mandinga (Mestre Liminha). The classes were taken in the garage of an old house and it was sometimes called “old style” of capoeira by the traditional methods and games taught. Two years later, he found Mestre Kako from Anca Capoeira who practiced a totally different style, more focused in Capoeira Regional. After 3 years training hard, he got the title of Aluno Graduado (graduated student), which allows one to teach with the supervision of the master, in 1999.

That’s when his life had a big shift, moving to Sao Paulo in order to finish his studies at the University. There, he met Mestre Aberrê, by that time leading a branch of the group Capoeira Gerais and remained 5 years training and working for the group. He also started to teach some classes at the University, where he got a scholarship. In 2003, when Mestre Aberrê decided to create his own group, Associaçao Cultural Aberrê Capoeira, Chula received the grading of Instructor.
In 2004, finishing the studies, he decided to live abroad teaching capoeira. Travelling to London, he opened a branch, with the support of Estagiário Maguim, and organised the “I International Meeting Aberrê Capoeira” in May 2005.
Being very successful in London, in 2006 Chula moved to Granada (Spain) in order to open another branch of the Group Aberrê Capoeira. After travelling all Europe in a tour with the Dance-Theatre Dani Pannullo company, he organised the III and IV International Meeting Aberrê Capoeira bringing along Mestre Aberrê from Brazil, and many other masters and professors from Brazil, Amsterdam, Madrid and Granada consecutively in 2008 and 2009, supported by all the students, specially Chapa. During this time in Spain he developed himself as a professional teacher spreading capoeira to many different stakeholders from society like Government (schools, ecological campaigns, no-gender violence campaign, youth anti-drugs campaigns), NGOs (capoeira for disabled, Granada Clown Company, recreational activities in Boyscouts camping sites) and private sector (workshops in fitness festivals, several capoeira meetings in Europe, exhibitions in Brazilian and Multicultural festivals). Finally in 2009 Mestre Aberrê and Mestre Kako gave him the graduation of Professor.

In 2010, he moved to Australia and, after doing a voluntary work teaching capoeira for aboriginal children in Cardwell (Girrigun Aboriginal Centre), is establishing a group in the northern beaches of Sydney, apart of doing workshops and exhibitions around the city.
